I think I might be able to write this without pissing myself. One of the comments on the YT page for the previous post got me to googling. One commentor mentioned something about “Alien Hand Syndrome”. That perked my interest. WTF is AHS?
Here’s what I found on Wikipedia:
Alien hand syndrome (anarchic hand or Dr. Strangelove syndrome) is an unusual neurological disorder, a form of apraxia in which one of the sufferer’s hands seems to take on a mind of its own…..
Ok, anything that referrences Dr. Strangelove in the opening paragraph can only get better.
An alien hand sufferer can feel normal sensation in the hand, but believes that the hand, while still being a part of their body, behaves in a manner that is totally distinct from the sufferer’s normal behaviour. They feel that they have no control over the movements of the ‘alien’ hand, but that, instead, the hand has the capability of acting independent of their conscious voluntary control. Alien hands can perform complex acts such as undoing buttons, removing clothing, and masturbation. Alien behavior can be distinguished from reflexive behavior in that the former is flexibly purposive while the latter is obligatory and stereotypical. The wiki goes on, but I pretty much just sat there giggling like a school girl trying my damnedest to un-see that mental image. You have to admit that that’s gotta be a pretty rare set of circumstances to cause something like that, but it must have really happened for it to be written up in wiki.
